What makes a role shift believable?

How can interpreters overuse role shift?
If the signers story has a lot of back and forth I feel that may cause confusion in terms of how quickly and how frequently the signer is shifting. It also depends on the signers way of signing, if their signing is more clear cut and precise perhaps it would not get muddied.
When can role shifting become confusing?
If there are too many characters, its hard to keep them separate in the signing space, also because the signing space is quite small, too many characters can make the audience confused.
For me as a viewer, I find when the signer has different facial expressions, and different intensities while signing, it makes it easier to visualize the differece in speakers/ characters!
